This rare antique Adana kilim is in beautiful condition for its age and has excellent clear dyes, with white cotton used to provide a clear accent to various motifs. The motifs are very similar to the more famous Reyhanli Kilims woven close to the Syrian border, and it could easily be attributed to that area. For me, as a rug dealer, I felt the overall design was a little wilder than those seen on the more carefully composed Reyhanli kilims, yet the colors are far more likely to have come from the Reyhanli area. As sometimes happens, this kilim could well have been made by a young woman who married across tribes. Sadly, neither group weaves kilims like this anymore, making them highly sought after on today's marketplace 
 
 Adana is a busy industrial and agricultural centre on the southeastern coast of Turkey that has its back to the extensive Toros mountains. Traditionally designed handmade kilims, cicms, yastiks (pillowcases) and cuval (grain sacks) were woven by settled nomadic women in the villages of the Adana and surrounding Toros mountain region as an ıntegral part of a young woman's marriage dowry. The symbols used on all kilims can be bold and often naive, but they have special meanings and can reflect the weaver's desire for protection, abundance, happiness, fertility, etc. Adana produces large quantities of cotton, which is often used in their kilims, for the colour contrast in both border and field designs where reds, pink, orange, purple and blue fading to grey are common.
Those Adana Yoruk (nomadic) kilims and cicims found on the marketplace are usually small in format, taking 2-3 months to make with a medium weave and more vibrant colour on a natural camel or white cotton background. .This particular two-paneled cicim kilim is very unusually beautiful in a finer weave, softer color palette, and large format and would have taken at least 8 months to weave. Adana kilims and cicims are always excellent value for money.
